Office Soul Soliciting to Happy Endings

Let’s start with something we can all agree on; slave labour, unpaid overtime, working weekends, passive aggressive office politics & social chess all eat BIG bags of swingin’ D’s right? Nobody juggling office tasks, against the clock, under nosebleed stress pressure, would not rather be face down in a pillow somewhere, eating a mouth full of chocolate with something delightful happening to their lower halves.

‘Work’ is widely considered a grinding, boring, tortuous test of willpower & patience, that the population simply tolerates to afford food, rent & fly sneakers.

‘Play’ on the other hand, is commonly considered a long forgotten oasis of hedonistic luxury that we experienced before the crushing burden of adult responsibility created frustrated financial flexi-time hostages.

How do people get out of this situation?

This is an extremely common & tough corner to paint oneself out of. Sadly, there is no easy 3 step career hack to instantly jump from one slowly sinking office ship to a Bilzarian life raft of Brazilian honeys.

You’ll either have to begin digging your El Chapo escape tunnel now or endure a 40-year career of forced smiles, political office chess & awkward elevator small talk.

For those with grander dreams of self-employment, becoming self-made CEOs or a hammock swinging nomadic freelancers, thankfully there is a dim light at the end of a long dark tunnel.

Having personally been through this painful prisonbreak process I can testify to the achievable mountain that must be scaled to earn one’s freedom.

Although an extremely difficult white knuckle scramble, the highly rewarding sense of personal achievement & self-empowerment made every late night, early morning & exhausting weekend side hustle 100X the short-term sacrifice.

Moral of the story, this is a totally do-able migration from eating daily swinging bags of great big D’s - to a limitless life of disciplined freedom.

Notice my use of the word ‘disciplined’. The reality of running your own business is you’ll actually ‘work’ countless more hours building, running & scaling your company than you ever did for your former full-time employer.

However, the big difference is, ‘working’ for yourself does not actually feel like ‘work’, it’s as enjoyable as a hobby, it’s a thing you'd love to do even if there were no money involved.

The old eye-rolling cliche...

‘find a job you love & you’ll never work another day in your life’, always seemed inapplicable to me when I cold-called double glazing leads for £2.20 per hour at my first ever weekend job.

Fast forward 25 years, only now am I beginning to notice how my complete immersion & ability to lose track of time when ‘working’ on my business. In the same way musicians ‘play’ their instruments or poker players ‘play’ poker; I ‘play’ business. I can comfortably work 10-12 hours a day, 7 days a week for years on end without needing a break, vacation or even a day off. I love what I do.

Good for you brah, but I HATE my job, how do I pass the time?

I feel your pain, trust me. Here is the laundry list of BS, underpaid, below minimum-wage jobs I’ve been bent over a barrel to work, long before I even began to ascend the rocky road of a career ladder:

  • Paper route delivery

  • Telesales - Home improvements

  • Telesales - Mobile phone sales

  • Telesales - Online banking

  • Telemed - Cold & flu hotline

  • Hospitality - Glass collecting & emptying ashtrays

  • Handyman - Painter & decorator

  • Sales assistant - Footwear

  • Sales assistant - Sportswear

  • DVLA - Mailroom sorter

  • Restaurant - Wait staff

  • Clubs, bars & hotels - Bartender

  • Event promoter - leafleting

  • Theatre - Front of house icecream usher

  • Events & festivals - Manual labour

  • TEFL - Vietnamese school teacher

This list also does not include side gigs, cash-in-hand jobs & dark alley hustles that I can’t write about publicly. As you can see, the path to finding work you actually enjoy has taken 25 years of doing crap I hate, for F-all money.

'There is only hard work, late nights, early mornings, study, practice, rehearsal, blood, sweat, toil, frustration & discipline. There must be discipline’.

Nothing impressive, rare or valuable was ever achieved cutting corners or taking shortcuts. If you’re in a situation that you cannot bear, use it as ammunition, alchemise it to drive you to where you need to be in life. Hatred, resentment, anger, vengeance, insecurity, self-loathing & depression are the most potent Tesla rocket fuels, that’ll elevate you to nosebleed heights of success far beyond your personal ceilings of potential.

If you ever plan to have any level of financial, geographic or personal freedom you must front-load some serious elbow grease to get there. If you’re in full-time work, great, that's at least a start. In the dark exhausting hours before & after your shifts, you need to be caffeinated & motivated, hustling, studying, saving & building towards a vision of you moonwalking out of your communal IKEA office with enough financial runway to get your venture off the ground.

Flow state

Have you ever been so absorbed in a task, a conversation, a hobby, a video game, a sport, martial art or workout that you have literally got lost in the craft itself? For some it’s long distance triathlon training, for others it's neck breaking Jiu Jitsu rolls, or maybe it’s entering a timeless zone of painting Games Workshop action figures? (Guilty as charged, guess how this guy spent his lonely sexless teens?).

What I’m referring to here is what fighters call ‘the zone’, what athletes call ‘autopilot’ & what monks refer to as ‘the meaning of life’.

Getting truly lost in one’s craft is widely considered the pinnacle of personal freedom & liberation from addictions, desires & ego validation.

Flow state is only entered when we require incredible superhuman reflexes or intense mental concentration to complete a very difficult or high-risk task.

The conscious mind switches to autopilot & many people describe this state as a brief window of enlightening clarity where the subconscious mind takes the wheel & allows the individual to coast & enjoy the scenery.

Tapping into this mainline is not easy, but anyone who finds themselves working, studying or perfecting any challenging craft will notice a tipping point to where the difficulty disappears & they become one with the discipline in front of their nose.

So what does this mean for those who dislike their careers or feel stuck in a situation they need to get the F out of? Everyone alive has something they love doing, their life’s mission is figuring out how to make a living doing that craft...

Not soul-selling corporate prostitution doing positions you hate for money you don’t have time to spend.

The more time you spend doing what you love the more you’ll find time accelerating, where hours, days, weeks & months slip from your fingers like a Kleenex in a tornado. I’m not downplaying how much effort, time & energy is required to make this transition & am fully aware of how much hard graft goes into any potential passion project.

Ultimately the choice is yours, if you’re happy doing what you do, power to you brother (or sister). But if you are not happy & feel as unfulfilled as a suburban 50s housewife, following your gut feeling is your internal sat-nav system telling you to leave at the next exit to check if this road is the one you actually want to be driving on.

How to lock into limitless focus

So whether you're striving to build the next social network, or aspiring to be an influential Only Fans creator, the ability to zone out & lock into a task will ultimately be the difference between those who onboard users & those who onboard w@nkers.

Not everyone is born with the god given gifts of hyper-focus, willpower & type A personalities so what does the rest of the human race do to tap into the ‘get after it’s fast lane? Fortunately, there are certain powerful nootropic supplements that help turn down the environmental noise of reality & dial in your mental focus to give limitless cognitive capacity.
